Ultra. 3 full days in the hot Miami sun in late March. This electric festival is hosted at the same venue as a previously discussed festival, Rolling Loud, in Bayfront Park. It is the biggest and brightest music event that Miami has to offer. Having been to Bayfront Park for Rolling Loud, I can say with complete confidence that the strategic placement of this park is perfect for the human sensory system. Consisting of a beautiful view of Miami skyscrapers and the bright blue ocean as well as the occasional taste of salt on your lips and the slight ocean breeze on your skin. This all combined makes the experience unbeatable. The body stimulating, head throbbing, music adds so much more to the sensory experience as well.
This music style is very comparable to North Coast, another festival that I previously covered. It is electronic, EDM music. The music is loud and shakes the city of Miami as well as your inner soul. It consists of fast beasts and a loud bass that is all electronically interlinked to create the perfect dance melody. You may have heard songs like this in movies where people are at clubs partying their nights away. The music is accompanied by blinding, flashing lights which makes the nighttime shows unforgettable.
As you can see from the image above, Ultra hosts seven different stages strategically placed across the park. It is very impressive that they can fit so many stages in such a small place. Since the music festival is just electronic music, there aren't specific stages for specific types of artists like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Coachella. The sets usually start around noon and finish up with the well known headliners at midnight or 11 pm, depending on the stage. However, to compensate for the travel on Friday, the sets start around 4 pm but still finish at the same time.
Now for the fun part, over viewing the lineup. The lineup from 2017 entailed: Chase and Status, Ice Cube, KSHMR, Major Lazer, The Prodigy, Underworld, Afrojack, Alesso, Galantis, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, Adventure Club, Don Diablo, Joyride, NGHTMRE, and Zeds Dead. In my personal opinion, this is a crazy good lineup consisting of the perfect mix of well known DJs and a good amount of underground artists too. Fortunately the lineup for Ultra 2018 has been released! A few headliners for this upcoming show include: Afrojack, Chainsmokers, David Guetta, DJ Snake, Flosstradamus, Kaskade, Marshmello, RL Grime, and Steve Aoki. As you can see there are a few reapeat DJs. Most of the time this happens because of two reasons. One being that there isn't a huge selection of EDM DJs to chose from or the other reason being that they had an amazing show the previous year, got great reviews, and were asked back.
The experience doesn't just stop when Bayfront Park shuts down for the night. In reality, Ultra isn't just a three day event. Miami Music Week is a better name. The party starts on the Tuesday before, the city of Miami lights up and the nightclubs gear up for the large amounts of incoming festival goers. Ultra definitely has one of the largest after party arrangements of all festivals. People make their way from the festival grounds to the unlimited amounts of nightclubs downtown Miami and on the South Beach strip.
Now for the notorious fashion. There is no really appropriate way to explain the fashion besides that due to the weather and other reasons, there isn't much of a necessity to wear a lot of clothing. The fashion is comparable to North Coast, which makes sense because both are electronic music festivals. The crazier the music, the crazier the accessories and colors. Miami New Times covers some of the best Ultra fashion for the 2017 festival. Ultra differs greatly from Coachella where you would see a lot of higher end fashion mostly due to the location, (Southern California) and partly because of the high celebrity attendance.
If you are searching for a crazy weekend experience and a pounding headache at the end of the weekend due to the blaring music and unforgettable energy, Ultra is for you.
Festival Tip: Familiarize yourself with the public transportation, it can be your friend if you use it correctly.
